Faculty Position in Plant Cell and Molecular Biology
The Department of Biological Sciences at Virginia Tech (http://www.biol.vt.edu/) invites applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor positionin the area of Plant Cell and Molecular Biology to start Fall 2013, at our Blacksburg, VA campus. Candidates are sought who address fundamental questions in cell signaling, cellular communication, or regulatory networksrelated to plant growth, development, or responses to the environment. Candidates employing contemporary and interdisciplinary approaches at single cell or multicellular system levels will be of particular interest. The successful applicant will join a Department of 40 faculty and approximately 80 graduate students providing an interactive and diverse research environment. Preference will be given to applicants with research areas complementing existing Cell and Molecular Biology strength in the Department (http://www.biol.vt.edu/research/index.html) and the Molecular Plant Sciences (MPS) research and graduate program (http://www.molplantsci.org.vt.edu), which currently consists of about 25 faculty and 30 Ph.D. students in seven departments. The successful applicant will also have the opportunity to participate in focus groups in Systems Biology, Integrated Studies in Earth Systems, or Drug Development. The Department and the Virginia Tech campus provide excellent research and support facilities for cell biology, genomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and bioinformatics.
Job requirements include a Ph.D. in Biology or a related field and preference will be given to individuals with postdoctoral research experience. The successful candidate will be expected to establish a distinguished research program and to provide effective instruction and advising to a diverse population of undergraduate and graduate students. Other responsibilities include: continuing development of professional capabilities and scholarly activities, including travel to professional conferences; curriculum development; participation in department, college, and university governance; and professional service.
