The Flora of Virginia and the Plant Photographs
In January 2008, the first photographs were added to species pages of the Digital Atlas in an effort of the Flora of Virginia Project. Many images are the work of staff of the Virginia Department of Conservation and Recreation’s Division of Natural Heritage; other photographs were taken by DCR-DNH staff on their own time or by avocational botanists who volunteered their work for this purpose. All images are protected by copyright.
The Flora of Virginia Project will continue to add photographs to the Digital Atlas. This will be done in several batches, after which the goal will be to fill in the remaining gaps, illustrating as many species as possible.
The Flora of Virginia Project was initiated to prepare and publish a modern, comprehensive manual of Virginia’s 3,500 native and naturalized plant species. The Flora of Virginia will serve the needs of scientists, students, decision makers and citizens interested in plants and their habitats in Virginia. This information will also increase our ability and desire to conserve the Commonwealth’s plants and the environments they inhabit. Development of the Flora has the support of a broad representation of Virginia organizations, institutions and individuals including Virginia Botanical Associates.
