Learning will be student-directed, and the course will operate in a journal club format. Students and faculty facilitators will investigate a focused concept in basic cell biology through an in-depth review and critique of seminal papers. This semester, we will investigate the use of stem cell in basic research and medicine. We will cover both adult and embryonic stem cells, including stem cells in plants. Students will lead class discussions. Approximately 1/4 of the course will be dedicated to ethical issues related to the use of human embryonic stem cells. As the final exam, students will write a  basic stem cell research proposal, including justification of their source of stem cells .

Evaluation:Regular class attendance is expected. Students will make oral presentations on topics from the original research literature. Everyone is expected to actively participate in the general discussion of these papers and should read the assigned papers before class. In addition, students registered A-F will submit a grant proposal on some aspect of stem cell reserach.

Grades will be based on the following:
Overall class participation: 40%
Formal presentation: 25%
Outline of grant proposal (abstract and specfic aims): 10%
Final grant proposal: 25%
