Course Texts:

Chapelle (1992) is an excellent text focusing on the geochemical and microbiological aspects of groundwater ecosystems.  The text is well written and nicely illustrated.  It covers a wide range of material applicable to the ecology of the subsurface.  Areas of particular importance include microbial metabolism, biotic processes and  bioremediation.

The text is not appropriate for the study of metazoans in groundwater ecosystems and, as a result, the book is listed as 'optional' for student use.  I do, however, recommend the text greatly for those who anticipate further work in this area of aquatic ecology.
