How to Apply

Thank you for your interest in becoming a GTA for Biological Sciences.  

Please note, the number of available GTA positions fluctuates each semester and is typically quite limited.  Therefore, there is no guarantee of assistantship availability.  

Once submitted, applications are automatically shared with lab coordinators and instructors, for review.  

If GTA positions become available, you may be contacted for an interview by these parties.

Description

Graduate Teaching Assistantships in Biological Sciences, consist of teaching 2-3 laboratory sections/week, depending on the laboratory course.  This equates to up to 20 hours per week. 

Eligibility

To hold an assistantship in Biological Sciences you must meet the following requirements:

  1. Be a degree seeking graduate student in regular or provisional status with a GPA of 3.0 or greater.
  2. Be enrolled in a minimum of 12 credit hours each semester (fall & spring).  Audited courses do not qualify in meeting the 12 hour requirement.
  3. Meet employment eligibility requirements to work in the United States.
  4. Appropriate background coursework in biological sciences, or related fields.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Completed biology laboratory courses in college (labs listed on college transcript)
  • Experience in teaching biology or other natural science courses
  • Completion of, or enrollment in GRAD 5004, GTA Workshop

Compensation & Benefits

  • A monthly stipend at a rate that falls within the assistantship stipend table approved by the Board of Visitors.
  • In-state tuition and mandatory Education and General fees
  • Waiver of the Out-of-State Tuition Differential (if eligibility requirements are met)
  • Health insurance subsidy (if eligibility requirements are met) at the rate approved by the Board of Visitors.
